What is Sonder?

Sonder is the realization that each person you pass on the street, sit next to on the train, or glimpse through a window is living a life as vivid and complex as your own—filled with their own ambitions, heartbreaks, routines, relationships, and inherited struggles. It's the recognition that every human carries an intricate inner world that continues unfolding in ways we'll never fully witness.

This word captures something we've all felt but rarely have language for: that moment when you suddenly grasp the profound depth of another person's existence. It's a reminder that complexity and richness exist within every human being, often hidden beneath the surface of what we show the world.

Why choose Sonder Counseling?

Sonder was chosen as the name for our practice because it captures what we believe makes therapy truly transformative: being genuinely seen in all your complexity.

Most people arrive at therapy feeling like they need to be simpler, more coherent, less contradictory. They've spent years trying to manage symptoms or make sense of experiences that don't fit neatly into boxes. But here's what we've learned through years of working with trauma survivors, couples in crisis, first responders, and people trying to understand themselves: your complexity isn't the problem.

Your layers, your contradictions, your protective parts—they all make sense. They're part of an intricate story that deserves to be understood, not diminished. When you feel truly recognized in your fullness, healing becomes possible in ways that surface-level interventions simply can't achieve.

We don't bypass the complicated parts or rush toward solutions. Instead, we explore the wisdom within your struggles, honor the parts of you that are trying to keep you safe, and discover the resources you already carry within. At Sonder Counseling, you'll find a space where your full story matters—where depth is valued over quick fixes, and where the goal isn't to become simpler, but to become more wholly yourself.
