Frequently Asked Questions
Q: How do I know if I need counseling?
A: People seek counseling for various reasons - managing stress, working through life transitions, improving relationships, processing grief, or addressing anxiety and depression. If you're feeling stuck, overwhelmed, or simply want support in personal growth, counseling can be beneficial.
Q: What type of therapy do you provide?
A: I use approaches that help you understand and work with your emotions, improve your relationships, and heal from difficult experiences. This includes helping couples strengthen their connection, teaching practical skills for managing intense feelings, exploring how past experiences affect you today, and incorporating body awareness when helpful. My work is always trauma-informed, meaning I understand how past hurts can impact your present life. I tailor my approach to what works best for you and your specific goals.
Q: What happens during the first session?
A: The initial session focuses on understanding your concerns, goals, and background. We'll discuss confidentiality, my approach to therapy, and what you can expect moving forward. It's also a chance for you to ask questions and see if we're a good fit.
Q: How long are sessions, and how often do we meet?
A: Sessions are typically 50 minutes long. Most clients meet weekly initially, though frequency can be adjusted based on your needs and progress.
Q: What are your fees, and do you accept insurance?
A: Individual therapy sessions are $160 per 50-minute session. Couples therapy is $180 per 50-minute session, with an initial 90-minute intake session for $250. I accept Aetna and BlueCross Blue Shield insurance for a limited number of clients. I also offer sliding scale fees for a limited number of clients based on financial need. Please contact me to discuss your specific situation and determine the best payment option for your needs.
Q: What is your cancellation policy?
A: I require a 24-hour notice for cancellations. Late cancellations or no-shows may be charged the full session fee.
Q: Is everything I say kept confidential?
A: Yes, your privacy is protected by law and taken very seriously. All sessions and records are maintained using HIPAA-compliant systems to ensure your information remains secure and confidential. For telehealth sessions, we use a HIPAA-compliant platform to protect your privacy during online appointments. There are limited exceptions required by law where confidentiality may be broken - if there's risk of harm to yourself or others, suspected child or elder abuse, or if records are subpoenaed by a court. Otherwise, what we discuss stays between us, and your personal information is stored securely according to federal privacy standards.
Q: What should I do in a mental health emergency?
A: In a crisis, call 911, go to your nearest emergency room, or contact the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline. I'm not available for emergency contact between sessions.
